The betting platforms (or betting exchanges)

The bet platforms, or the betting exchanges, allow the direct bet exchanges between players: instead of betting against the bookmaker as usually, the players bet directly ones against the others.

Betting strategies on betting exchanges

On such a platform, the players can play the role of the bookmaker: the website is only an interface to put in contact the players. The platform also guarantees that the payments will be done.

In fact, the betting exchanges operate closely enough to a site like Ebay : the site neither buys nor sells, it only organizes the exchanges between the bet-players. The most well-known betting exchanges are Betfair and Betsson.

The first advantage of these sites is that the odds are frequently much higher than the ones offered by the traditional sites, because there are no bookmakers to take a margins. On the contrary, the betting exchanges get their revenues by taking a percentage from the gains (for example, a maximum of 2% from the gains is taken by Betfair).

The second advantage is that the possibility given to each player to propose bets and odds (the inverse acting of a normal player!) gives free way to new strategies.

Indeed, each player may:

Bet "normally", by accepting the odds proposed by other players ("back" bets). In this case, there is no difference between the betting exchange and a normal bookmaker, but the odds could be higher, since there is no bookmaker to take its share. The bet are won if the team or the player wins the match.
Become the bookmaker, by proposing odds and setting the maximum stake he will accept ("lay" bets). Then, you have to wait for a buyer to come and accept to bet with you. By "laying" odds, you assume that the outcome in question will not be achieved (you play the bookmaker!). On the contrary, if the outcome is achieved, you have to pay the winner his stake multiplied by the odds you proposed.
